Another chance for someone to get their post count up:

I can no longer access t'internet on my laptop. I get the 'Page not found error' for all urls. I am using a wireless router and know that the connection through from laptop to big wide web is there because I can establish a VPN connection to work without changing a thing. Once I have established a VPN connection then I can surf to my hearts content using the corporate network.

Any ideas please? And if someone could supply an IP address that I can ping (one that will respond rather than pretend it's not there) I'd appreciate it.

Have pinged an external address so must be something to do with DNS (but out of my depth there). Used to be able to access t'internet via my neighbours unsecured wireless router  but get the same issue. Must be a setting on my laptop.

If your using DHCP at work for your IP settings you could specify with home IP, subnet, gateway and ISP's DNS server in the Alternate properties tab in the network properties.

I've tried the cable directly from my set top box into the back of the laptop but it's exactly the same.

The only reason I VPN into work is to be able to surf while sat in the lounge (well that and sometimes to do some work) because . I want to get back to a situation where I can turn the lappy on and start surfing as soon as I launch IE.

It's not some wierd setting within IE is it? try setting it to automatically detect settings in the IE options under connections, I have to scrub these when using the laptop at home else it spends forever and a day looking for works gateway.

Just a thought...

Are you with NTL? Sounds like a transparency issue. I had it a while back where I couldnt see shit in web pages yet could ping IP's.

Try looking here at section on sidestepping transparent cache thingies:

It was definitely the laptop. Could connect t'internet fine on desktop upstairs. I deinstalled fookin Hummingbird SOCKS and had to run some tool I found to repair all my winSOCK settings. Can access internet now but connecting to work from home is buggered :)
