Ive decided to purchase a laptop over here seeing as Im gonna want a DX10 capable desktop machine when vista is released, so no point in going nuts on a desktop atm. But I know feck all about lappy gfx.

ATI seems to be the main cards, havent seen many nvidias at all. The ones Ive been looking at are ATI Xpress 200 or something. Anyone clued up on lappy gfx to recommend what I should be looking for? Budget isnt an issue as long as the technology isnt obselete 24hrs after purchase.

Ta.

that is if money is no issue ;)

Depends really what u wanna do with the lappy really, dishing out for the 7800 or 7900 go's is nice, but that is if u wanna go full gaming. Theres some decent midrange ATI cards out as well.

Just make sure to read up on where the gfx card gets his memory from. Shared memory will kill performance, so try and go for a 128mb dedicated card at least.

Also keep an eye out for True-Life screens or whatever they call them. Adds a shiny layer on the top of the screen drastically increasing contrast and picture quality.

TBH, all i would use it for gaming-wise is for EVE and maybe WoW. Is this radeon xpress 200 thing anygood? Cos thats all i see around for prices that are reasonable for what i want - a temporary gaming lappy.

We recently bought a Dell Inspiron 6400

It's got an ATI x1300 gfx card with 64MB dedicated and 64MB shared mem. I'd suggest the ATI X1400 card to play WoW, the 1300 would cope with Eve no probs I think.

Also make sure to check the mem options seeing they're selling ti standard with 2x256MB. Just pick the 1x512MB and get urself another stick of 512MB seeing u can get it for a fraction of the price Dell is charging.

I think Tessa has an ATI Express 200 thing in her PC, seems to play the Sims 2 well enough.

I've got a 6800go in my laptop and it plays wow/hl2 etc absolutely fine. I can raid MC on this with all settings on high and shitloads of mods installed.

Its this one http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1862

but with 1gb ram and 1.8pentium M. Can raid it up too with twin SATA drives which i'll do one day. The gfx and cpu socket also looks as though they're upgradable but getting hold of a single gpu is quite hard and expensive.
