Hey folks

You remember my musings (I'm sure) on the DX10 games thread. I've purchased a new pc now - (ordered the bits last night). I could've waited but I had the cash and I know it would've been spent on something else if i didn't get the computer bits.

I went with:

Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Retail 2x 2.40 4Mb 1066 MHz

Motherboard
Asus P5LD2-VM DH/C i945G Socket 775 PCI-E

Memory
Corsair TwinX 2GB XMS2 Dominator DDR2 PC6400

Graphics
XFX Geforce 8800GTX 768MB PCI-E DDR3 Dual DVI TVo

Storage (this is just to start - I intend on adding in a 1 tb raid array)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 Hard Disk Drive 250GB Serial ATA II
7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM

Optical/Backup
Liteon-Benq 16x DL DVD-RW+RAM Blk
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader Black

Display
22" Xerox XM3-9WB Widescreen TFT 5ms-Multimedia-Black-Twin Input

Case
Coolermaster Centurion 5 Silver

Power
Hiper 580W Modular PSU BLACK atx

The motherboard will go up to 4gb and the memory is the best I can get without spending silly money. I've paid a bit more on the graphics card because it's specs are far superior to the one that was on sale. I thought that if I was going to spend a bit on this I might as well buy the best I can afford rather than skimp on some items (hence the named psu which normally i wouldn't bother with)

All in all I'm pleased - it's fairly upgradable so If it starts getting sluggish - another 2 gb of ram will help give it a kick start and I think the mobo is sli so I could go dual 8800 gtx if I need too.

On top of that I'll have a kick arse 22" flatscreen. I didn't bother with a sound card as I generally use a usb headset for games these days.

The motherboard has built in sound anyways doesn't it? I cba with sound cards, they inevitably start upseting the rest of the system at some point.

Still wondering why you've gone Intel rather then AMD/nForce. Would've cut the price down a bit probably.

Also, the mobo has build in VGA? Is this for dual monitor support? The 8800 GTX has 2 ports to hook up a monitor anyways...

It's also a non SLi board :(

The Asus P5NSLI would be my pick in the same price range tbh. And if I had some extra cash left I'd go for an Asus P5N32E SLI to be more futureproof. I'm an nForce fanboi tho ;)

I'd prefer the Asus M2N32SLI DeLuxe / Athlon™ 64 X2 5200+ combo myself. Price on the proc would be lower and the mobo would be a bit more pricy.

All in all a very nice setup, not sure if it'll last 3 years tho.

AMD = shit

I know you like them but every AMD I've had has given me grief and I just don't like them.

I'll be honest - PCI-E has just released new standards so the PCI-E slots can take 2gb of bandwidth and the first mobo's supporting that will be released around q3 this year with cards to follow.

I know in 2 years I'll want to upgrade but I won't want to spend lots of money - at that point - new mobo, new 8800 (or successor) 2gb pci-e should be enough to give me a massive boost as I know Core2Duo's are good for a 50% overclock - so at that point I'll also purchase a decent cooler and overclock my cpu.

The whole sli thing is a hangover from before - I'd probably dropped that mobo out as tbh again - by the time I'd want to sli that card I'd want the new 2gb bandwitdh mobo anyway.

I'm happy with what I chose and there's zero and I mean ZERO chance of me buying amd again :)

It WILL last at least 2 years - ideally I'll make it last 4 :)

It's swings and roundabouts with Intel and AMD tbh, my last machine was an intel, this one is an AMDx2.

One thing I have been very happy with in my machine is the decent soundcard, I never use the on board ones, I like my sound to sound purty tbh.

It doesn't matter what the spec is tbh, you have to take the attitude that you've got the best value for your budget on that specific week, as next week there will be a better deal and you'll just end up holding off and never actually buying anything.

I'm surprised you bought a XEROX monitor tho, they're hardly well known for making good monitors tbh

They're not reknowned but the comments on that monitor are all very positive. Also at that price... well you'd be mad not to have a punt on it - if it's gash I can just stick it on lenka's pc and voilla! we have widescreen tv upstairs :)

The monitor might be a moot point anyway - it's been out of stock since they sold out just after chrimbo.. so I'm not confident it will arrive anytime soon :s

He's basically saying his new PC gets him wet and the others are sort of agreeing.
Hope that helps sweetie

And I have to sit here with a shitty 3500+ and an aging gfx card that decides to randomly crash my pc :(

Grats though mate. Roll on true global virtualisation then you can share some of that extra power with me.

Is it a coincidence that when Goose is out of office Ravin is on the forums? How big is this network you run? Only one PC seems to have net access :P
