Lo Guys

Not being much of a techie for quite some time now, I'm a little perplexed as to how to get this PS3 beast online.

It comes with an ethernet cable, which I have plugged into the back of my computer to bum the internet conection off that. However I can't seem to get it working.

The machine does pick an IP address, but when it tries to conect to the internet it comes up with an error "An error occurred while resolving a name with the server (80710102)" I have no real understanding of networks, so this makes little sense to me. I have set up my computer to be the host of the network

Do I really need to get a router? to plug both PS3 & computer into...
Or shouls I be able to just plug the PS3 into the comp & connect to the net via it?

What kind of modem are you running of at the moment?

Error sounds like there's a problem with the DNS settings. I really don't have a clue about the PS3 interface or settings but Google gave me this.

Also make sure you're using a crossover cable rather then a "normal" network cable.

generally speaking Internet Connection Sharing is a bitch and you're better of getting a cheap switch/hub or a wireless acces point.

Seconded. Connection sharing through a PC made our host PC reboot every few hours as a student even though we tried multiple OS's so I wouldn't really go near it. It's a pain in the arse to setup too. Though I guess just plugging something into a router and it working has made me lazy.

I just plugged it into the back of the router and it worked.

Well I must admit I have exhausted evverything I have thought of to get the PS3 to conect through my PC, & it still aint working.

So... I guess I need to get a router, any advice in that regards? should I go Wifi, or stick with the cables. At the moment there is only the phone, 1 comp, & PS3 that would be hooked up to it.

Mines hard wired, less chance of packet loss, only my PSP, laptop and Wii connect via wifi and that's only because I don't use them for online gaming.

i got my ps3 working fine with connecting to the PC, only trouble was the network had'nt been given access in the firewall settings, so it was'nt picking up the ps3, but once i did that it worked fine with ICS , and um, the cable, whether its ethernet or cross over, tbh i dont no, its the cable i got with my 360

Folklore for £15:

Lair for £15:

Most likely a pricing error though...

Does anyone know if its possible to download ripped PS3 games, & install them or burn to disc to use on PS3??

I would like to se what some of the games are like, but I know they are most probably not worth the cash to buy em.

I thought you needed to have the console chipped to be able to do that, but maybe not even this is possible with the PS3?

Im sure someone will know for sure!

No chips available, be sure however to check the PS Store as there are quite a few game demos in there to try.

List the games you would like to try incase I already have them.

Add me to your buddy list too, I am ASBO Allstar on the PSN
