Anyone on Vista yet?

New machine will be ordered in the next few days and I wondered if I should save myself £60 and not bother with Vista as I have a perfectly good legit copy of XP.

Thoughts please.

DX10 is Vista only. So if you've got a nice juicy Geforce 8600/8800 that's DX10 compatible I'd say go for it. If not, stay with XP.

Vista is basically XP with a memory hogging shell.

I've got vista and it works OK.

Drivers could be better, but all in all it's fine.

Vista's ok, its basically a jumped up shiny version of XP, problem is it suffers from the same probs xp had when it was first released, ie practically no old software and/or hardware working with it without specific drivers. Most companies have rolled out updated drivers, but some of your old software or hardware may have compatibility issues

There are two major pro's with using Vista:
2.5gb+ of RAM
DX10

If you're below 2.5gb RAM, don't bother. If you're not interested in DX10, don't bother. All Vista is, is a shiny XP which is a lot heavier on resources. There are also a lot more bugs not sorted yet.

I got a new laptop with vista on - it has some nice features - I have only 2gb - and i suffer from spped probs on the... I would like t say odd, but I would say frequent occasion and if your gonna do anything with BEA workshop 9.2 your just having a laugh.

TBH I wouldnt bother buying it - just get the preinstalled OEm when you get a new PC. XP does the trick. I have had a few compatibility issues with some software which sucks !

I'm sitting here trying to decided this,
only 2gb of ram, and tbh no intrest in vista, but.
and 8800gtx...

I'm pissed it wont run on xp in dx10, never even looked at that tbh.

So is it really worth it, I do a lot of photo editing and online games as u all know, how bad is the system going to suffer if i get vista.

I got about an hour or so till i hit the shops to grab a new monitor, to diecided lol....

Interesting

just need something on image editing with adobe now and if that looks ok i might just get vista and not another 2gb or ram thack fuck as that would mean no new monitor.

If you've installed Vista just get a copy of Lost Planet Extreme Condition.

You get a DX9-version and DX10-version shortcut after install.

Just start both versions to compare...

Well its running fine on 2gb tbh(home premium), using about 20-26% my ram all the time, looks nice too.

But tbh xp flows better in some respects.
not convinced it is worth it though unless its for Dx10, cant see any other reason to upgrade.

There's a nice eve-online gadget that keeps an eye on your training for you.

I love vista tbh. I think it is to XP what XP was to windows 98.

This is why people don't like it, because although it's similar to xp in many ways, at it's core it's an entirely new beastie.

If you want to spend the time to set up your security you will never need to worry about worms and the like.

I still haven't touched it, 5.2 seems pretty low for a brand new PC though, makes me wonder how these new laptops I see with 1GB of RAM that have it installed run. I think I'll try it when I get my next PC but I'll be having a Suse partition on there too, kind of hoping to use that more than Vista for anything other than games.

Rating atm is 0-7 i think, well was last i looked...

"1 or 2 usually has sufficient performance to do most general computing tasks"
"3 is able to run Windows Aero and many new features of Windows Vista at a basic level"
"4 or 5 is able to run all new features of Windows Vista with full functionality, and it is able to support high-end, graphics-intensive experiences"

From what i've seen on the net atm anything with a score over 3.2 (cpu) will "usually" run all games currently out (dx10) at above 75% gfx.
The rest of my gear is 5.9 so meh, till it wont play at 30fps i aint changing anything tbh.

Oh and i got the gadget for EvE :D its great... got a few too lol..

Gah, I'm considering getting a new PC pre-built rather than buying all the parts as I could be just about to get a job that may require me to start soon and without having a PC at home I could well struggle to get up to speed there.

Having said that my in-laws just bought a new PC just for interweb browsing (Took me along for advice, ignored my advice and took my wife's instead) and it's only got 1 GB Ram, Vista Home Premium installed and seem to use 500-700MB of RAM standing. This worries me as pretty much any shop bought PC I get will have Vista too so how much memory will I need to get to actually have a properly usable PC? I'll have to have some version of MS SQL running, possibly 7 (does that even run on Vista?), IIS enabled and Visual Studio 2005. I'm thinking 4GB of RAM would do the trick. This will not be a gaming PC and as such I'll use what ever shit graphics card comes with it.

I also have the option of grabbing partition magic and changing the inevitably huge partition size and installing Windows XP Pro 64 as I have a serial number for it from TechNet which may make a lot more sense, I just don't want to blat a PC with Vista on as eventually I'll have to use it anyways.
