Right I was going to buy a Lexus, but I changed my mind mainly due to me thinking it would be selfish of me with the baby coming along so soon. So I got to thinking about buying me something to make up for it and I want a new machine.

I am shit with kind of thing so here I am on my knees asking for help.

I would like some help building a machine, I have no clue so lets say I have a maximum of 2000 pounds to spend. Is this enough? Is this too much?

What can I get for my money??

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I know what you mean Cal, I sold my Lexus when the wee man came along, I just felt wrong driving round in my 4 litre V8 engine, think of the planet and the future of my child!

I think mother nature loves me now I've downsized to a 3 litre straight 6 :)

Doing the same thing Cal, haven't committed money yet as Intel are due to drop chip prices at the end of the month.

I'm sure Goose will spec something nice but if you want to play around then there are some great configurators at the place I'm looking at ordering from. I managed to spec a fairly beastly setup for about £1300.

I must be doing something wrong. How can you guys afford babies and new pcs in the same decade?

Cal, you got the bestest ever Dell about 2 years ago. Can't you just replace the CPU, gfx card and update the RAM?

I don't see how you can get a beast of a machine from that site for 1.3k. I was on 3k before I even realised there was more than 1 page :?

I'd also like to point out I don't drive at all so am really taking care of the earth's future for all your children. Gratitude can be shown by building the 3k PC and sending it to my address in the US. Thankyouplease.

Can I have your old one? May even offer you a fiver or two for it.

Seriously though. Before you go spending a shit load of dosh on a complete new rig, you could investigate the options for replacing the bits that are outdated.

At the rate that WAR is coming along at, you'll probably need to rebuild a new PC anyway ;)

That is a good point Neil. By the time WAR gets here, any components bought now are going to be dated. If you can cope with current performance Cal, it may be worth waiting.

He was going to buy a new car worth considerably more than 1.5k. He is also about to have a baby with no idea as to how much money they cost so surely it would be wise for him to blow his spare cash now before the baby arrives and suddenly his spare money goes on anything and everything the baby could possible want. I say go for it and make it a proper beast though also set a bit asside for a blue-ray drive later on.

One thing obvious from these build it sites the are selling one chipset and offering a 2nd higher chipset as upgrade if you buy now upgrade to the higher chipset as this supports the new processors which may be all you would need to update for war .Buying a single high gfx card now on a new mainboard will mean you can go SLI later adding a 2nd gfx card the same as prices drop.
As you have a new addition cut back sound options ie card n speakers as you will be on headset for the first few years

I've been looking at a new PC as well...

ASUS P5N-E SLI 650I SOCKET 775 FW GBLAN ATX
INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4GHZ 4MB 1066MHZ S-775
CORSAIR 2GB DDR2 PC6400 XMS2 XTREME (2X1GB) CAS4
ENERMAX GALAXY 1000W SLI/CROSSFIRE PSU 220V
2x ASUS EXTREME GEFORCE 8800 ULTRA 768MB HDTV PCI-E

For a total of 1772£

I might have to buy it on two occasions, I think. At least I can hold off with the graphic cards for a month. Going to wait until end of this month before I order the CPU though, since it'll probably drop in price somewhat.

Oh yeah, and Sweden's expensive on computer stuff.

680 chipset needed 4 future cpu's.Depends how u look at it
spend £100 on a 650 board now then 6/12 months on another £100 for a 680 board
or £175+ for the 680 now there are good reasons for either approach altho the 680 now will let you do some serious tweaking

One thing I would say of this thread tho its shown me just how much my machine sucks and I hate all who posted idea's here

I have no problem forking out 100£ a year down the road for a new mobo. As long as the graphic cards live longer than that, I'm fine.
