I got a USB drive with rather a lot of stuff on it. (Stuff i really dont wanna lose)

Anyway this bastard drive has decided it doesnt want me to access it. I can use Repair Mechanic and it shows the file structure is still intact. But Vista and XP prompt me to format it before i can use it..

It looks like its something to do with the partition table or mbr but im not sure how to go about fixing it.

Wondered if any of you guys have seen or used a decent piece of software that can detect whats wrong with a drive and fix it without having to format or lose anything on the drive.

Looks half decent.

I'm taking its a proper hard drive rather then a mem stick?

Ran chkdsk with the /f option?

Get the harddrive out of the case and hook it up directly to your computer, this to exclude any errors in the USB controller.

Just ran that package and it sees the drive and file system all ok.

gotta buy it to fix partition/mbr

hard drive innit ..

i might buy another usb drive and do a recover to that before i start dicking around too much with the drive tbh..

Tried copying the contents through linux? Ubuntu will boot from CD so you don't have to install it, though not sire if it would detect a USB drive.

Right..

Using any data recovery software i have installed so far i can see and i have the option to recover all the files on the drive. The only problem is that they all want me to buy the software to do it and i can find no crack or serial for any of them :/

Anyone got a link to a fully working data recovery package ?

Can you run a virus check on the drive or does Windows not allow you to even connect to it?

I'm currently running Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery on it.
Seems to be recovering everything i wanted to save to my new 750gb Maxtor One Touch Drive. Once ive got everything saved i can then work on getting the old drive back up and working, without running the risk of losing everything. I reckon either a format or a low level format and re partition should do the job..

Only 266gb left to go :/
