Right

New pc is here and lovely it is too, BUT, my download speeds have gone through the floor on Vista. Any ideas chaps? I think it may be that my old router isn't liking Vista and I can't get any updated firmware or drivers for it.

Eh? Your router shouldn't give two shits what your OS is should it? All it does is provide a connection to the net. Do you still have your old PC too so can can be 100% sure it's the new PC that's causing the issue?

I'd check your network connections to see if your PC is sending a shitload of packets but not receiving much. Look at the card's settings and check if it has a duplex setting, if it does switch it to half duplex, or if it's already on half duplex switch it to full duplex. Not sure if that should be an issue nowadays as I haven't had to alter one of them in years but always something to be wary of.

Welcome to the world of Vista where you spend the first day thinking about getting your XP disk back out. :D

Also try switching that bullshit User Accounts Control off, Kuif hates it

I'm still flabbergasted that as a technician for BT he can't fix it himself, or make a new router out of pine cones or something.

Can't offer any advice on tweaking Vista, as it just worked for me as soon as it was installed.

Do ntl still do lines or is it all VM now, as they suck balls where I am, getting 10% what I pay for some days others about 80% others...
Bit of a joke really..

But I can’t really go to anyone else as my Bt line was no where near good enough for a phone let alone anything else.

I noticed moving data around the Pc is slower on vista to xp, don’t know if that helps any.
But as for actual download speeds, mine are as good as pre vista.
Well I use the term good lightly here

If you're using the same PC as you were with XP then there's bound to be a performance difference as the OS hogs your RAM. I've found Vista faster for it but that's because my PC is a shitload better than my last XP one was.

Thanks for the help - overwhelming, really.

It appears that my router decided to choose the moment of my new PCs arrival for it's suicide. New router tried and speed is back where it should be. Vista is still a royal pain in the ass on a wide variety of things but the internet speed issue isn't its fault.

The new beast is sexy as fuck, I'm enjoying going back and re-playing games with all the eye candy turned up on my 22" Samsung LCD, something I have never been able to do in the past :D

Vista is way better with SLI ;)

In all honesty, the biggest reason to change over to Vista is DX10. You'll never get the shiny new gfx out of your 8800GTX as DX10 is Vista only...

SP1 for Vista is planned for release in Q1 2008, this includes lots of "multimedia" tweaks and fixes. I've been running Vista for a few months on my home PC and havent found a lot of troubles. If games require better/different drivers the game will give you a warning in most cases.

I'd say go for it,

Ideal for you Macey:

Still love you though

Oh and you may as well shell out for Vista as part of a new PC bundle rather than have to upgrade to it later.
