Continuing saga of my PC running like a bag of slugs...

Have been long time user user of Zone Alarm for my firewall of choice.
Recently had slight issues with vsmon.exe process hogging CPU resource, but since upgrading Zone Alarm today it is stuck at between 50% and 75% CPU usage. With zlclient.exe using the remainder - my pc sticks at 100% cpu usage, and is practically useless.
I have read that switching the mail checker thing off fixes the problem, but cannot actually get anyhting to respond to allow me to uncheck this option.
Im currently rebooting the machine without the LAN cable in to see if I can fiddle with settings, but if I cant I shall be removing Zone Alarm.

So. Any suggestions about a free firewall software I can use?
Is the windows built in one any good?

Well fuck me! It actually worked.

E-mail protection is now off (as I use web based mail with a built in checker), and it feel like i have suddenly realised I have had my handbrake on after 8 hours of driving!

My cpu usage is at 1 - 3%, whereas before I would accept it hovering around 30 when 'idle'.

Funny how it takes something breaking completely before I fix it and realise how badly it was running before.

On that joyous note - im off to the pub for a cheeky half.

Aye maui unless you use email through zone alarm, you wont need all of its security.

the only thing zone alarm does for my email is sort the spam mail from the good mail and removes it.

For this solution Maui you will need.

- At least 20 bricks (found in any building yard or Rubish Dump - therefore Free)
- Mortar - (Acquired from a building site)
- Petrol (Acquired from someone else's car or petrol lawnmower)
- Matches (from gris who smokes)

Step 1) Construct wall with above stated Bricks and Mortar.
Step 2) Dowse with Ptrol
Step 3) Set alight with matches

Voila!

One free firewall!
