Just ordered some new parts to build a new pc:

case: Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570, black
psu: Zalman ZM850-HP, 850Watt
cpu: Intel Core 2 Duo,Boxed, E8400, Socket 775
cooling cpu: Scythe Mugen “Infinity”
hdd: 2 x Hitachi Deskstar T7K500, 500 GB, 7200 RPM
mb: Asus Striker II Formula nvidia 780i
video: 2 x Asus EN8800GT,512MB, GDDR3, PCI Express x16
memory: 2 x Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4PRO,

I have to wait a bit on the cpu so I have still time to make any changes. Anyone got any experience with above parts and thinking "don't do that, I would buy......" :)

I was thinking of setting my new pc up in Raid 0 with Vista 64bit.

Luke

Looks good, wouldnt go for RAID 0, 1 drive fails and all is lost.

RAID 1 mirrored pair is the lowest lvl basic raid youd want to think about doing tbh ..

Also might be worth looking at Quad cores if youre looking at that higher lvl dual.

Aye, but I was thinking more in speed terms than safety. In raid 0 disk access is twice as fast. But then again, do you actually need faster disk access while playing games?

And then new 45nm quad cores won't ship anytime soon they told me. But on my PC I"m either gaming or photoshopping, a dualcore should be enough for that I hope.

Im not sure youll even notice the extra speed and the risk of losing everything if 1 disk fails is imo to high.

How often do hard drives fail now though? I had one die just before I moved here that had a lot of my stuff on but to be fair it was about 7 or 8 years old. If something is important you need to run regular backups to external media/devices.

I only have 1 hard drive in my PC :P I only bother with RAID on servers.

Hard drives only fail when you really really don't want them too :(
Found this review http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php? ... herboard/1
There are others seems to be a rather pricey board and in this review the X38 board owned it .Whatever you buy 5 mins later it will be half the price with a new version just out.

Aye, but once I have triple SLI with 3 9800GX2 cards I don't care you can overclock a X38 board more :)

What with the price of hard drives these days Luke, you could buy a couple of decent drives and stripe them then just have a non-raid drive (or two) for the important data that you don't want to lose if half of your RAID config goes missing. With 3x SLI config you'll already have one mother of a power supply :)

I've used RAID 0 for the past 3 PC's and the loading time difference in games has been noticeable.

You get pre-warning on certain mobos before HDD fail, my current mobo has been warning me for months but I just keep ignoring it.

Only HDD to beat me into games on loading times on the previous PC was Progs who I think RAID 0 two 10k HDD whereas mine were 7.2k RPM.
