Hi all,
My desktop seems to have given up the ghost.
When I press the 'on' button, it does absolutely fuck all.

Obvious answer is the PSU, but before I go and buy a new one, has anyone got any other possibilities that I should eliminate first?

PS - Yes it is plugged in.

Fuse in the plug? :)

Other than blown PSU/knackered motherboard, you could check that the power switch is still connected to the motherboard.

Does the PSU have a little on/off switch on it rather then the "normal" PC power button.

Otherwise you've most likely blown the PSU or the motherboard.

Could also be a duff wall socket/extension cord or a duff power cord. It's unlikely but possible.

I knew I shouldn't have fed my Mogwai after midnight :(

I have checked all the cheap fixes - all connected, new fuse, different cable, different socket.

I guess its Power Supply or Motherboard. I hope its not the motherboard to be honest - that would suck considerably more.

Im looking at new ones - can I assume that if I get a new one that it will have all the right connectors and stuff on it? There seems to be loads to choose from...

Nice overview of some Thermaltake PSU's. Keep in mind if you wanna upgrade in the future and if you're gonna go with Crossfire or SLi.

Thanks Gyng!

The top one looks like some sort of wind up butt plug.

Just for anyone who might be in need of closure, I bought a cheap 600W power supply from a local source (replaced 650W eek).

It all works fine apart from the fact that it had one less plug thing on it so I have had to remove one of the hard drives.
Also one of the cables was too short (the SACA one or something), so I had to move the main hard drive into a different place.

Apart from that my amatuerish fumblings had the desired effect, and I now have the pleasant 'new computer' smell being pumped around my study by the new PSU :)

Are they SATA drives or IDE? If it's IDE you can pick up a Y splitter pretty cheap and plug the drive back in, not sure if you can get them for SATA drives as I've never looked.

This might sound weird, but when i ordered it I asked for one drive, with the cables for another so I could add one myself. Looks like the main one was SATA, but the cable for the second one i put in was IDE. you can have one of each right? They both worked, but had different plugs on them.

So to answer the question, the replacement one would be IDE.

By the looks of things the power cable for the IDE one was the same type of power plug that the SATA used, but the SATA used 2 of them.

It hsnt blown up in my face yet, so i think im right!!!!
