(00:36:03) (+FisheR) If all the cables are in place would that suggest the gfx card ?

IF you read this...

Prolly yes, that or the monitor's gone tits up.

P.S.
How was New York?

If your machine is physically powering up then the first thing to check would be the GFX card.

Although tbh I came and stole it while you were on holiday and replaced it with an orange.

Cheers

if there is a problem with the gfx card or mobo connection (internal stuff) the pc will beep 3 times... otherwise its the cable or the monitor giving u trouble

Don't think its the gfx card. The whole PC won't boot now. I get a small light on the Mobo to turn on and the Fans spin for about 1second, then it all stops =/

Could that be the PSU ?

Did you change any bios settings? Sometimes removing the cmos batt and the power lead for half hour to default the bios can clear that fault, short of that its likely to be RAM or if you have an AMD the CPU if its P4 then its more likely to be RAM. if you have more than 1 stick, remove them and try 1 stick at a time.

Could still be the Gcard mind, a gcard can fail and the pc may not realise if its faulty at a point thats beyond the point of signal output.

if its none of the above then your sys brd is prolly shagged. Eliminate everything by disconnecting everything non essencial. FDD, HDD, CD drives etc. if it then works reconnect everything 1 at a time.

or just buy a badger.

If your bios settings have been borked, then there is normally a single jumper you can take off and then put back on to reset to factory defaults.

I think it usually is jumper 6 but best to check the manual.

removing the cmos battery and powercord works as well, easier as well then to fiddle around with those tiny jumperthingies ;)

Just pull the battery and powercord from the mobo for 10 secs that'll do the trick

Sometimes there's just 2 solder pads you have to short out for a moment. Which is way too fiddley for most peeps.

Hides.

What Mobo is it Fish?

Can you test the PSU in a different PC? PSU probably wont do much unless it is connected to a mobo, there is a sense wire to control the PSU that needs a signal.

you can test the PSU without a mobo, when you short the green and black (doesnt matter which one, they are all ground) wire.

Might be a silly question, but is your PC still in warranty or did you make it yourself.

Mainy built it for me but he doesn't seem to be around much anymore, as i'm unsure about the warranty and need to ask him. The dude in the PC repair shop laughed at the suggestion that it could be the PSU and after about 30mins poking at my machine with his screwdriver decided it was either the CPU or the Mobo.

He tried a new CPU in my PC which didn't work. He then decided to try my CPU in another PC. When he took his CPU out of my machine to test the machine he slapped together to try my Mobo it didn't work. He reckoned my mobo had blown his chip. lol

i'm even thinking of taking it to the PC World repair Shup :<

I still don't think its broken. Same thing happend to me.
After a week without having any power (and removing the cmos battery), the pc suddenly worked again.
Thats when my brother tried to turn it on, and it actually did :/
And I thought it was dead.

check your pm for my mobile number if you need any help checking anything about your mobo out. I am unconvinced that the mupp in the pc repair shop actually knew what he was doing tbh.

It could be a number of things - it doesn't sound like a gfx card problem. It could well be the cpu seating on the mobo. The problem with these things is that there are so many things that it could be. .

Normally if its a memory or gfx problem the motherboard emits two beeps on boot up - short for gfx and long followed by two short for memory - or something like that - so I doubt it's those.

I doubt its your psu as your pc is booting - if there's power - its not a psu problem.

Turn it off - take the case off - check all component connections - press down on the ribbon cables for the hd, floppy and cd drives. Touch the side of the case first then firmly press down on the memory sticks and check the processor is seated correctly. Check the cards are firmly in place and then turn it back on. If you can hear power getting to the HD (it whirrs) check the processor fan - ensure everything is powering up via the mobo ok and see what happens.

It isn't the monitor - probably isn't the gfx card - and its prolly something to do with mobo or cpu seating...

It might just be easier to buy yourself a nice shiny new mobo and cpu . . . . if you can fit it yourself that is

Simon
