Ok, just sitting here a bit bored so I thought i'd set a little poser for people to suggest answers to - the problem has already been solved though.
After having a radeon 9700 in the computer it was removed and replaced by a radeon 7000 - the computer worked absolutely fine and no difference, except for reduced fps was noticed.
When a replacement graphics card was installed into the machine - a radeon 9800 pro the machine would post fine, but just before the windows xp splash screen the screen would go black and the machine would lock.
Trying to boot into safe mode brought up the advanced start-up menu and upon selecting safe mode the computer locked on the o/s selection screen (a standard screen in windows xp).
The same happened when trying to enable vga mode.
So people, what would you recommend to fix this most annoying of problems?
