Dear Geeks,

Please can you recommend me a media player that can stream media from my PC to my TV? If it had DLNA functionality, that would be good.

Something like this: http://www.sony.co.uk/product/network-m ... r/smp-n200

Hmmm

"Sony SMP-N200: Format support
It can deal with MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV, but there’s no FLAC support – which could rule it out entirely if that’s the way your library is encoded.

It’s worth noting that while some files aren’t supported via DLNA, they are via USB… which is a little weird."

Can't you use your XBox for it?

You start a thread asking for advice then don't bother getting anything? How do I know this thread won't end the same way?

You don't mate but that doesn't mean that the advice isn't appreciated ;)

I've sort of convinced myself that this Sony will do. Like all the streamers out there, it has it's good and bad points but it'll do. Not that I've bought it yet.

I've got a WDTV Live box, paid about £65 for it and it seems to play most stuff... plus you can get the weather, youtube and all that kind of crap.

Would that sort of thing do you?

And you can control it from your phone via WiFi to freak your kids out when your downstairs that the TV is haunted... worth the price for that feature alone...

Interested in this thread.

The situation I have is that I want to find a way of getting the movies on my PC to play on my tv without having to put them on a disc.

I bought a smart tv a while back, and this can take a USB drive, and it can connect to my PC as a media server, but I am finding that it is very limited in terms of which formats it can play. It's a little behind the curve already which is a pain.

Would a WDTV Live box be what Im after?

Basically I want something that sits between the TV and my PC that can stream whatever files I want it to.
Im thinking MKV and AVI being the most frequently used.

The last movie I downloaded was an AVI file. It played on the PC, but was not recognised by the TV or the XBox. Would the WDTV Live keep up to date with codecs etc via firmware upgrades?

Also had a thought that it might be worth hunting down a firmware update for the tv...

You'd probably have more luck hacking your XBox than updating your TV, would be cheaper to replace too if it goes tits up.

should probably add that the xbox is currently 'hidden' while we cold turkey our 3 year old.

I think he was allowed to play it at too young an age (by his grandmas partner I hasten to add) and he got really addicted to it.
Got to the stage where he would actually shit his pants (literally) while playing it, because he thought we would turn it off if he left the screen.
This was with only an hour or so every few days. Rationing it seemed to make it worse!
So we bit the bullet and said no more xbox for you sonny Jim, and he only hated us for a few weeks :D

I get the same response with my son. I bought a pool a week ago for the kids so now he spends his days asking me if I'm finished working yet so he can go swim.

Swimming is slightly more wholesome though!

I mean I bought the pool as a distraction from his iPad and laptop. He spends way too much time watching Youtube videos of his heroes playing games. The fact he knew who PewdiePie was when I had no clue was somewhat concerning. I had to buy him Castle Crashers because someone on Youtube was playing it.

I haven't seen my boy since he turned 16. I think he feeds off the heat coming off his xbox.

Thats why i find it so hard to say "dont watch too much tv", "dont play with mummies ipad" etc etc

I know its going to be a battle to fight, but I just didnt think we would start that battle at 2.5 years old!
