I got my crafting upto 8, nearly 9 last night. Mainly making bags.

I started to knock out some 6 slot 5% weight reduction ones which are quite nice.

Once i get to 10, you can have all the pelts i find unless i need them for some form of alchemist stuff. Going to try and get my gathering etc upto 40 so i can harvest in The Commonlands tonight, but everyone seems to be doing the same in The Sprawl and The Ruins

40 is what you need before you can go for tier 2 ingredients....
