Gardens of the Moon by Stephen Erikson -- epic fantasy that many find horribly hard to get into for some reason
The Accidental Time Traveller -- bloke accidentally makes a time machine, but it can only move forward in time
His Majesty's Dragon -- The Napoleonic Wars, but with Dragons! Easy to read, I wouldn't recommend it from a literary standpoint, but it's good fun anyway.
Black Lizard by Edogawa Rampo -- Japan's Edgar Allan Poe, and he does it well, too!
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman -- Guy joins the military to fight on distant planets. Not gonna say more than that but pick it up for your own sake.

Could probably think of a dozen more books, but I'm lazy and don't want to spend energy thinking in this heat.

For Sci-Fi, if you haven't read any Richard Morgan then get some. Start with Altered Carbon. He has also written his first fantasy novel, The Steel Remains which I really liked.

Of the ones that Azaz recommended I have read the Forever War and it is good, if short. In that classic sci-fi area I'd also go for Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination, Starship Troopers (nothing like the film btw) and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlen.

For fantasy, Joe Abercrombie has written a great trilogy starting with The Blade Itself that I absolutely loved. Cracking characters and none of the usual fantasy cliches in sight.

Peter Brett's Painted Man and the Desert Spear have been my latest reading and they are great too, again, no fantasy cliches.
